When the temperature drops and the snow starts to fall, the Durham Region turns into a winter wonderland with plenty of outdoor adventures on offer. And if you don’t feel like braving the cold, there are tons of fun things to do inside where it’s toasty warm as well!

Whether you want to commune with nature on peaceful snow-covered trails, get the adrenaline pumping on a snow tubing ride, or practice your axe-throwing skills, these are the best things to do during the winter in Ontario’s Durham Region.

Slide and Spin Down a Mountain on a Snow Tube

There’s more than one way to get down a mountain in the Durham Region. Skiing and snowboarding are fun, but nothing beats the thrill of flying down a slippery slope on a cushioned snow tube. Take a straight shot down the groomed run or put a spin on your tube to add to the fun.

The Lakebridge Ski Resort in Uxbridge has a tubing park where you can reserve two-hour time slots that include snow tube rental, lift rides, and unlimited trips down the mountain. Snow tubing is open to all ages and no lessons are needed. However, reservations are required in advance.

Hone Your Axe Throwing Skills in Pickering

You may have thrown a few darts in your life, but how good are your axe throwing skills? Axe throwing is rising in popularity across the country, and the Durham Region is no exception. BATL Pickering is one of the biggest axe throwing venues in the province, and a great place to learn the sport.

Grab some friends and hit the lanes at BATL Pickering where you can learn the basics of axe throwing or fine tune your skills. There are packages for groups of all sizes including large parties and they include safety tips and coaching. Drinks and food are also available on request.

Snowshoe Along Snow-Covered Trails at Heber Down Conservation Area

One of the best things about the Durham Region is that it’s easy to escape the urban sprawl and immerse yourself in nature. The Heber Down Conservation Area is located in Whitby, but feels a world away from the bustle of busy streets. There are over 5 kilometres of trails to explore here year-round.

Strap on your snowshoes and set off on one of the many trails through the forest and along Lynde Creek. The trails are not maintained during the winter, but that just gives the area an even more natural feel. Be sure to follow the marked trails and respect the native wildlife.

Hit the Slopes at Brimacombe Ski Resort

The Durham Region is home to Brimacombe, one of the largest ski resorts in Southern Ontario, so it’s not surprising that skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pastimes here. The resort has 23 trails, two terrain parks, and seven ski lifts.

Whether you’re new to skiing and snowboarding or a seasoned pro, Brimacombe has something to offer everyone. Newbies can rent equipment and take lessons, while the more experienced can hit up the black diamond runs and learn new moves in the parks.

Catch Your Own Fish Dinner on Lake Simcoe

Lake Simcoe is often called Canada’s ice fishing capital because the lake is home to over 40 species of fish. During the winter, a number of ice fishing outfits set up huts along the ice with everything you need to catch and cook perch, whitefish, lake trout, and pike.

Tim Hales Fish Huts is one of the more popular ice fishing operations in the Durham Region. Located on the eastern side of the lake in Beaverton, the business rents out heated ice fishing huts with benches, holes already cut out of the ice, and a propane stove for cooking.
