Halloween is just around the corner—and there’s much to do in and around the Durham Region to celebrate the spookiest night of the year. From ghost walks to pumpkin carving, there’s something for everyone in the days leading up to Halloween.

For those seeking thrills and chills, and for those searching for something a little less scary, here are our picks for the top 5 Halloween events in Durham in 2022. 

Pumpkin Carving Contest: St. Paul’s United Church

St. Paul’s United Church, located at 178 Church Street in Bowmanville, hosts a multitude of family-friendly events. This year, they’re hosting a pumpkin carving contest—and all ages are welcome! Show your artistic side and create the spookiest pumpkin in all of Durham Region! 

Pumpkins and refreshments will be provided, and there are prizes to be won for the best designs (separated into age categories). Register here for this fun, free event, happening October 29th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm!

Spirit Walk: Clarington Public Library

Searching for some spooks and scares—but not too much? The Bowmanville Branch of the Clarington Public Library, in addition to Clarington Museums and Archives, is hosting their outdoor Spirit Walk history tours. Learn about the area’s most haunted places and chilling, unexplained events.

Event participants (all ages welcome!) will start and end the tour at Bowmanville Library Branch, located at 163 Church Street. Tours are held October 17th, 19th, 24th, and 26th, beginning at 630pm and running until 7:30pm. Tickets are available to be purchased online here

Knox's Pumpkin Farm Market: Knox Pumpkin Farm

This family-friendly favourite, Knox Pumpkin Farm is known for its beautiful scenery for one-of-a-kind photo opportunities, delicious homemade treats, and fun events. Located in Hampton, north of Courtice, their Halloween event is running daily until the 31st of October. 

Kids will especially love the wagon rides, Halloween decorations, and—of course—the animals! Pick up a pumpkin or just enjoy the fall atmosphere. Tickets can be purchased here.

Pickering Ghost Walk: Pickering Museum Village

The Pickering Museum Village is hosting a number of events this October, including a thrilling, cabin-themed escape room, fairy tour, and their ghost walk.

Their outdoor ghost walk is happening every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night in October, multiple times per night. Recommended for those aged 12 and older, guests are taken on a spooky tour of the historic grounds, with stories and scares along the way.

Halloween Haunt: Canada’s Wonderland 

It would never be Halloween in the Greater Toronto Area without a shoutout to Halloween Haunt at Canada’s Wonderland. One of the most popular events of the season, this famous amusement park, located in Vaughan, transforms itself into a frightening Halloween experience annually. Running from September 23rd to October 30th, this is a must-see for all thrill seekers in the area.

Halloween Haunt features night rides, such as Leviathan and The Bat, spooky events and attractions, shows, and costumed characters located throughout the park.

It is important to note that makeup and costumes for guests are not permitted. As well, the event is not recommended for those under the age of 13. More information, including tickets, can be found here.
